Hollywood actor and 'Star' angler Julian Lewis Jones makes it a 'wrap' off Barafundle Bay
The day may have started off at a leisurely pace but did it finish with a flurry!...read on
Rhys Llwellyn called me up a few weeks ago asking whether we could help him get amongst some fish here in South Pembrokeshire and provide a back up team and safety crew for his TV production team. He explained that he and his good friend Julian Lewis Jones were co-presenting a six part television series for S4C about fishing in Wales covering various techniques, quarry and angling disciplines - of course I was only too happy to help as were the rest of our team.
'Kayak fishing' was the call and obviously there is no one better equipped to help in this discipline than us. We were ready on Freshwater East beach by early morning waiting for the crew and our distinguished guests to arrive with our Ocean Kayak 'Prowler 13s' tackled up and our support craft and crew ready and eager to begin.
The weather was looking ominous all day but it held off and the camera crew were able to take some great shots of our wonderful Pembrokeshire coastline while afloat. The tide started to flood and we were into fish straight away - first an inquisitive Gurnard, then the Mackerel showed and our very own Ben McDonald enticed a Pollack followed almost instantly by a small Bass. Meanwhile Nick was into a nice Codling to 3lb aboard the Hardy 23.
The filming was good and the fish kept coming but we needed a finale and to be rewarded for our effort and preparation... and 'boy-oh-boy' were we about to get it!
Alan Johnson and his son Nick aboard their Hardy 23 suggested a little spot and we paddled over - five minutes later 'zing', one of the reels started screaming followed by another and then another and we were amongst a 'Mackerel hunting' pack of Tope - not huge specimens but as lively as you like and great sport on light gear especially whilst perched aboard our yaks!
Julian struck in next and the cameras started rolling, two minutes later and it was Rhys's turn - fantastic - there was the finale and it was in the can!
An absolute great end to a superb day and a day shared with wonderful people to boot.
'Diolch yn fawr' Rhys and Julian for allowing us to share in a small part of your wonderful adventure - good luck with the show from all of here at Fish Pembrokeshire. Kevin
On board 'Illusion' with Sea Angler's Dave Lewis
...the weather started to close in and the sea was building and after a promising start on our quest for the Pembrokeshire Bass we were all starting to get a little nervous as to whether or not Dave was going to have a wasted journey and we would miss out on showing everyone how wonderful Pembrokeshire is...
...and Hywel would miss out on getting into a proper fishing magazine for a change!...only joshing!
We anchored off Caldey and Dai offered up a 'crab breakfast' whilst Dave expertly presented one lure after another - nothing, not a nibble...meanwhile Hywel was on the front of the boat minding his own business and quietly 'waving' his 8/9 fly rod like only he can do...as the sea anglers got more and more frustrated Hywel got more and more focused with his retrieve altering and varying like the very sea we were floating on.
Next minute as Dai announces the next mark is imminent an excited "YES" resonated around St Margaret's Island and the master fluff chucker expertly played his well earned Bass in!
Fantastic - and on one of his own hand made flies too; now christened the 'HM Bass Enticer'!
Dave got some great pictures and the day was complete with only minutes to spare as the wind got up and the rain started pouring.
Thanks Dave for taking the trouble to visit us; I for one thoroughly enjoyed the 'craic' and I know Dai and Hywel did too! Kev
Tuesday 8th June on board Illusion with Dai Kent and a cracking bunch of lads from Newcastle enjoying a bit of 'R and R' after recently returning off tour.
Dai escorted 24 of our country's finest out over three days on board Illusion. The tope was a respectable 25lbs and fantastic sport!
